a16z Podcast

Building the future through technology

    view_headline
    Description

a16z is a numeronym that represents Andreessen Horowitz, a VC firm based in Silicon Valley. The a16z Podcast is an in-house show that “discusses tech and culture trends, news, and the future – especially as ‘software eats the world’.”

Blockchain is currently the up and coming technology, and because of that, a16z has created a few shows focusing on it. All of them are worth a listen, but the 2 we’d highlight in particular are the Decrypting Crypto episode with general partner Alex Rampell and Why Crypto Tokens Matter with Chris Dixon and Fred Ehrsam.

Note: the a16z Podcast tends to discuss things from an advanced perspective, so it’s not the best option for beginners.

I have been listening to this podcast for 3 months now and loving it. The topics are great and guest speakers are no nonsense, great insights and to a large extent inspiring. No long winded start or adverts or aimless blubbering.

I’ve listened to many tech commentary shows and this and O’Reilly’s podcasts are the best for getting insights into technology and the business of technology. Given this is run by a venture capital firm this skews towards the business side and does it really well. Often they have people they have invested in on the show. I am always amazed at how candid they are. It’s a real credit to them that they encourage and get people they’ve invested in (and in many cases may be the principal investor) to be so open. It’s great for the listener too as it makes for interesting conversations. This is rarely “news” so even episodes from well over a year ago are worthwhile listening to if they are on a topic you’re interested in.

This comes out of the Andreessen Horowitz VC firm and tends to cover timely tech trends. Some of the analysts are excellent and worth following. The episodes appear at random intervals and are usually very short, often under 20 minutes. The podcast has the unfortunate tendency to end cold, leaving the listener wondering what happened, and it gives the podcast a non-professional, ADD feel. It would be nice if they bundled these up into longer weekly shows with a preamble describing the topic and speakers and adding an ending as a UX features. Then publish them at a somewhat regular interval so listeners can fit them into their schedules. Despite that, this is worth checking out if you are following the tech scene.
